December 2021 Story 14: A Day in the Life

December days look like this, documented in twelve photographs:

  1. Kaiya wakes up at 5:20ish in the morning and heads down to the Advent Calendar. This year it featured Chocolates that Dad went shopping for. As the days get closer so do the pockets and of course the chocolates.
  2. Kirra has been finding the days long, on the weekends she is up early to play with Kaiya. Sometimes Kaiya wakes Kirra up to have some company. On the weekdays it is more typical for Kirra to have a sleep in until 6ish and sometimes comes in to see Muma for a cuddle.
  3. Kaiya is a morning person and gets a lot of activities done in the morning. Kaiya is not allowed to watch TV in the morning, so she has to find something to use her brain. Lately she has been asking Google for help with spelling when she writes letters, and notes, and does her artwork. I hope one day we can sit at the patio and do journaling together as a daily practice. Kirra’s daily practice would be Yoga, so we would all join in that as well.
  4. Kirra chooses her t-shirt and shorts underneath her uniform and her socks. At some point I need to help them learn how to conform sometimes but at the moment they are expressing themselves through their choice of socks. So far, no drama. Although this choice of socks doesn’t usually last all day. They are very thick and warm.
  5. The morning chaos on the kitchen bench. It is a magnet for everything. Toys, paperwork, money, life administration, car keys, hats, wallets. IT drives me nuts. This time of year is particularly full on. I dream of clean and clear spaces.
  6. We have so much nature that visits us in the mornings. If we can’t see them we can hear them. This time it was a Kookaburra that is a regular visitor. Possums visit us in the evening. They are all raiding the compost.
  7. The last weeks of school in December means Christmas parties and Kaiya often feels inspired to wear a Christmas hat every now and then. Kaiya is pure sunshine.
  8. Working From Home. Work for Mumma is intense. I find it really had to switch off. Daddy’s work can be really intense too. Hopefully we can make the world a better place. End of.
  9. Flowers. Some kind of nature makes it into the house almost every day. It can be a gum nut, a pebble, a leaf, or a flower that has fallen to the ground, or a collection of weeds.
  10. Summer Showers. On a hot day I tell the girls they can take some shampoo out on the trampoline, turn on the hose and play instead of having a regular shower or bath. It’s very popular around here.
  11. Fairy lights at night. Yeah. I really try not to watch TV. I’m watching creatives on You Tube recently in short videos on our big TV and it’s cool. The lounge room at night with fairy lights. It’s still light outside but just dark enough for the girls to see them before bedtime. Awesome.
  12. Kirra wants to read. Every night, and can read for hours. It’s great but we have to negotiation every night to set limits on it. Kirra is driven. Absolutely determined to be as smart as she can. Our little Mighty One.

This is what a typical day in December looks like through 12 photographs.
