Pieces of Home 2022 Prompt 4: Door

Door. There are many doors in this house, most with locks, all with rules and masters. The busiest part of the house is where there are no doors separating us. The bedrooms are designed to be retreats for the kids, and we all have a space in the house.

The main door is often cluttered and a temporary home for collections of nature, promotional mail, art and drawings from school bags, trinkets from school uniform pockets, toys abandoned on the steps because the girls need to leave them behind, and mismatched socks and shoes form the end of a school day. A big bucket of sticks features outside because we bring one home from the pavement every few days. They are the branches that fall from neighbours’ trees and make good little fires for our BBQ and toasted marshmallows every now and then.
