December 2021 Story 1: 12 words for This Year

This is the third time trying to write my first December Daily Story for 2021. Maybe this one gets published! December stories are filled with magic, joy and sparkle, but also a moment where we reflect on the year that has been. In past years the reflection usually included gratitude, and celebration of the milestones the girls have reached.

Our 2021 year has been one with a couple of challenges we hadn’t seen coming, one heartbreaking, and the others not quite as big, but challenging none the less. My top 12 words for describing the year includes exhaustion, grief, determination, hustle, celebration, spectacular, surprise, pride, adventure (albeit one), ennui (flat), grateful, and progress.

The pandemic, health, routine, and the stop and start nature of the limbo we live in from COVID has messed with my social mojo. We are all exhausted. There was a lot of hustle, Michael and I find ourselves in careers where we directly can improve the lives of others by staying focused, doing our research, and advocating for smarter ways of doing things. There is so much purpose in our work. Kaiya Kelly Puggle and Kirra Isla were both spectacular this year, each in their own way. Kaiya is using her powers for good, and Kirra has dedicated her thoughts and time to study. As a family we spent a lot of our spare time doing exercise together and playing basketball. It makes us feel both old and alive. We managed to sneak in one trip to Canberra and the snow in Perisher so are thankful it broke up the feeling of boredom that COVID and in particular, peoples’ responses to it, causes us. The girls both did two Acknowledgement of Countrys in school assemblies so whilst Reconciliation is still disproportionately a burden on Aboriginal people, we are in a season of faster moving change and the benefit of being brave and being met with support is not lost on me. I am grateful, and whilst hope is a dangerous thing, love to see, that countered with the racism, our baby girls are also seeing messages of solidarity in support of their pride. Black is Beautiful! Murri Christmas.

Enjoy my festive story telling season.

Here are photos of the girls Christmas Pajamas. They will be spending a lot of time in them, in the aircon, watching Christmas movies and listening to Christmas music this year.
