15/07/2014 Happy *belated* NAIDOC Week (last week)!

Hello all,

Or should I say:
Gaba yaadha = good day (g’day) or Yaama = Hello for my people the Gamilaraay/Kamilaroi from South-west Queensland  or as my NanMa says Gudamulli for Hello for the Darumbal people in Rockhampton.  (there is a list from the State Library attached so you can check them all out).

Last week was the 6-13th of July this year and is the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee or as Muma puts it, National Aboriginal and Islanders Day of Celebration. It is always a bit difficult around here as it classes with the timing of the Bastille Day celebrations but we are trying to set new traditions around here and make sure that in addition to our attendance of the Musgrave Park Family Fun Day that we have a special dinner with some Australian Native Foods. We haven't set a date for that yet.

The Family Fun Day was good fun, we didn't quite get the picture of me watching Corroboree for the first time but I sure did hear it while I was having a top up.  There is usually a lot of signing and dancing and market stalls from community organisations to sporting heroes and vendors selling artworks and traditional tucker.  Unfortunately we didn't find any Dugong this year but there was a Torres Straight Island stall selling Sop Sop and Damper.  There is never enough indigenous food so there is always some anticipation to see if we can get a taste of it at NAIDOC.

This year we ran into a very good friend of Poppy's, his name is Patrick Dodd and his wife's name is Sue.  They are originally from Rockhampton but moved here to be with their grandkids (Muma says hint hint Nanma and Poppy). It was wonderful seeing them. We promised to visit sometime when Nanma and Poppy are in town next.

Enjoy the pictures!
